One of biggest problems that the 3DS has at the moment alongside the battery life is the amount of glare you sometimes get due to the new screen design. The Nintendo 3DS Battery Life is undoubtedly one of the biggest complaints with the 3DS (alongside the occasional spot of dizziness although this is an entirely different issue). However, there are ways to improve the battery life, so here are a few quick solutions to breaking that 3 hour barrier:

In the event that for whatever reason the battery gets damaged or hasnt been “trained” properly (i.e. you are supposed to fully charge the battery on first use, then let the battery fully discharge before you charge it or it can affect the battery life but as with every new gadget, some of us are quite keen to test it out), you can find that the battery life is considerably shorter than it should be. Having a 3DS battery life lower than the already short 3 hour life can be incredibly annoying, and for a small price you can actually just replace the battery. Although replacing the battery in a Nintendo 3DS isn’t as easy as just swapping in a pair of AA batteries (so you can’t have a charged battery handy to just switch them unfortunately), the back panel does come off simply by removing a few screws – small screwdriver included with the battery!
If you don’t find yourself needing a new battery, there are a few basic tips on how to get the most out of your standard 3DS battery. Whilst they may seem obvious, you would be surprised at how much difference they make. If your 3DS is still new, the best thing you can do is fully charge the Nintendo 3DS before you use it, and when you use it you should discharge it as much as you can. Getting the power to run low before you recharge it will help the battery life to last longer than placing it back on the charging cradle every 30 minutes. Other things that help with the battery life are lowering the settings as much as possible when you can. This includes turning off the wireless functions whenever possible, as well as turning off the 3DS settings (I know this slightly defies the point of the 3DS, but it is an option). You can also turn down the screen brightness which will help a fair bit, and with everything on as low as possible you generally get around 4-5 hours of play out of your 3DS. However, with all of the settings off it is not exactly the “3DS experience” so to get the most out of your 3DS, the Nyko 3DS Power Pak is easily the recommended option here. As with all mobile devices, it is also always recommended to carry a travel charger with you!

Here’s the sciency bit about why you might get headaches. Headaches can be caused when playing the Nintendo 3DS because of how the 3D effect is achieved. When you look at something 3D, each eye is sent a different image, which at times can confuse your brain and put stress on your brain’s processing capabilities – that’s when you get a headache. It’s even worse when you move the 3DS around so I wouldn’t recommend using it on the move!
But fear not! Here at GamingZap we’ve come up with our Top 10 Headache Solutions that don’t involve taking tablets:
Take regular breaks – I know nobody wants to put a new game down, but simply take a 5 minute break for every hour you’re playing and you should avoid headaches.
Avoid playing in dim light – Your eyes are already straining when playing the 3DS, so why add to it by having poor light!
Learn how to use the slider on the 3DS – turn the slider all the way down then slowly increase the 3D intensity until you find the level which suits you
Read the 3DS instructions – I know we all hate reading instructions, but if you learn how to use the software properly then you should avoid headaches
Have a strong cup of tea or coffee – this could be your 5 minute break, but caffeine is said to reduce blood vessel swelling meaning that headaches are less likely
Put an Ice Pack on your head – If you get a headache the cooling of the ice on your forehead or the back of your neck can help reduce the pain
Exercise – The dreaded E word – it doesn’t have to be strenuous, just pretend you’re playing the Wii or Kinect and do a few star jumps every so often to help keep your blood flowing
Massage your pressure points – a little head massage will help to relax you – if you close your eyes even better!
Drink lots and lots of water – you could have a headache because you’re dehydrated, so drink lots and regularly
