Tritton AX 120 Xbox Headset Review
Tritton recently released their newest addition to the range, the Tritton AX 120 Headset. The Tritton AX 120 works as both an Xbox Headset and a PC Gaming Headset, notice that this one is not compatible with the PS3 so if you are looking for a solid entry level headset, this is not the one for you. For everyone else however, the Tritton AX 120 might be the best budget headset you can buy, and here’s why.
Sound Quality
The Tritton AX 120 is a basic stereo headset, so don’t expect any fancy sound processing units like on the Tritton AX 720 or multiple speakers like the Tritton AX Pro. What it does provide however, is a solid stereo headset with a detachable microphone. The bass is solid and the high notes are surprisingly clear for a lower priced budget, although the mid-tones can be a bit muddled so don’t expect any great direction sound out of them. However, for general use and especially listening to music or watching movies, the Tritton AX 120 performs pleasantly well. With deep sound and a noise cancelling microphone that works as it should, there is little to complain about especially in comparison to the slightly higher priced Turtle Beach X11 headset. The in-line remote gives easy access to sound controls and lets you control the chat levels on Xbox Live, although this isn’t a particularly special feature and is fairly standard on Xbox Headsets these days.
Comfort and Build Quality
First impressions on the Tritton AX 120 are that it is rather lightweight. This works both ways, making it feel slightly cheaper but also helps to reduce fatigue when wearing the headset. The earcups themselves also look slightly thin when you first pick them up but are surprisingly comfortable. The leather-style earpads are soft enough to be quite comfortable, but I find that these style of earpad tend to make my head rather warm after extended use. Feature-wise, there is nothing on the Tritton AX 120 that would make it stand out from any equally priced headset besides the detachable mic. That said, it is very comfortable (one of the most comfortable in this price range) but not comparable in build quality to some of the higher end headsets. The gloss finish is also rather prone to picking up fingerprints.
Conclusion
As an Xbox headset, the Tritton AX 120 performs as a great starting headset. The performance is easily comparable to the Turtle Beach X11 headset, although at a lower price point and (in my opinion) looks slightly better and is more comfortable. Whilst it isn’t going to be winning any awards for performance, it is still a solid entry level headset that can be used on both the PC and Xbox 360.
