Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Reviews Summary
March 25, 2008
Reviews of the highly anticipated Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 are all over the web. Here’s the summary of what is being said about the game.
- GameSpot (Score: 8.5 out of 10) - … Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is the best tactical shooter on the market. It doesn’t gamble as much as it should and, instead, seems to take cover behind the formidable foundation established in the first game. But to its credit, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 does make one big gameplay tweak and provides another highly playable single-player campaign. It also provides a decent suite of cooperative options and more excellent online multiplayer. Though its experience system is now clearly behind the one found in Call of Duty 4, no game has a better control scheme or more satisfying tactical play. This ace belongs in every shooter’s hand.
- IGN (Score: 8.4 out of 10) - … the biggest problem that most will have with Vegas 2 is that it doesn’t differentiate itself enough from the first. It doesn’t feel like an expansion pack exactly–-it’s more than that–but it doesn’t feel like a full-fledged sequel either. For those who haven’t taken a stroll down the streets of Sin City than you needn’t look any further than Rainbow Six Vegas 2, but those looking for a sequel that surpasses the original in everyway imaginable will be disappointed.
- GameSpy (Score: 4.5 out of 5) - Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed the first Rainbow Six: Vegas, then you will undoubtedly find considerable value in Vegas 2. Although it may seem like more of the same, we were pretty entranced with Vegas and so highly recommend Vegas 2 as well. Sometimes, it pays to stick with what works.
- TeamXbox (Score: 8.4 out of 10) - Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a competent shooter as well—just like its high-stakes predecessor—but we have a sneaking suspicion that Ubi sunk more development dollars into the next next installment of Rainbow Six than it did into this title. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is definitely worth a look-see, but don’t expect much more excitement than the first time you plopped Lockdown into that fat, black console.
- 1Up (Grade: A-) - Though a great overall package that packs a lot value, Vegas 2 is probably best characterized as a glorious example of fan service. Though not necessary, familiarity with the previous game adds tremendously to the overall experience, and many of the enhancements are direct responses to the very vocal and passionate community that plays online regularly. Though there are a few funky issues with the single-player campaign, they by no means outweigh the good stuff that the game has to offer overall.
- VideoGamer (Score: 8 out of 10) - While Rainbow Six Vegas 2 feels more like an add-on than a proper sequel, that shouldn’t stop you picking Ubisoft’s latest up. The gun-play is excellent, the production values are top notch and the multiplayer game modes will keep you coming back months down the line. As long as you’re not expecting a complete overhaul of the gameplay seen in the original, Vegas 2 will provide plenty of terrorist hunting fun.
- Eurogamer (Score: 7 out of 10) - In short, the inclusion of the XP system has unexpectedly saved Vegas 2 from feeling like a lazy cash-in release. Although it barely offers anything new elsewhere, this single innovation does enough to make you play more than you otherwise might - and in new ways, too. … Overall, Vegas 2 feels like an incremental expansion, despite the success of the character-creation feature. The annoying thing is that with a bit more investment these quickfire sequels would feel like true follow-ups, which would go a long way with those of us who’ve been following the series for the past ten years. As it is, we’ll still go to Vegas, but we’ll be grumpy on the way home.
