Reviews Summary

  1. GameSpot (Score: 7.5 out of 10) - Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates looks terrific, from the colorful character design to its particle-heavy dungeon crawls. As you may expect from a Square Enix RPG, the cutscenes are striking, with particular attention given to dramatic camera angles. The sound design is the real star of the production, however, featuring an evocative soundtrack and fitting sound effects.
  2. GameSpy (Score: 4 out of 5) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates is probably the best single-player dungeon crawler we’ll see on the DS for some time. Game balance is great, the game looks beautiful, and there’s even some really fun writing hidden beneath the youth/casual storyline. We can’t forgive it the lack of true multiplayer, though, and that omission makes the AI issues even more obnoxious.
  3. IGN (Score: 8.2 out of 10) - Take the original design of the Crystal Chronicles series on Cube, streamline it for a single player experience, and then rebuild the multiplayer from the ground up, and you’ve basically got what Ring of Fates has to offer. Since DS is a portable, a huge chunk of the game’s development went to making sure that the single player offering is up to snuff, and it paid off marvelously. Characters have real depth to them, there’s a huge mass of scripted storytelling, the CG is – as always – the highest quality out there on DS, and the sheer amount of depth within the main story mode is pretty staggering. … When all is said and done though, we’ve been watching Crystal Chronicles DS for over three years now, and the final product was well worth the wait.
